I got a traffic ticket in Long Beach. What happens now?
First make sure you were actually in the City of Long Beach. A Long Beach traffic ticket written inside city limits is answered at Long Beach City Court, a state court in City Hall, and nowhere else. But the barrier island holds other communities too, two of them sharing the city’s 11561 ZIP code, and a ticket from one of those is decided somewhere different. The return court printed on the summons settles it. After that, the charge decides the points.
Where Does a Long Beach Traffic Ticket Go?
Long Beach is a city, not a village. It became a village in 1913 and reincorporated as a city in 1922, which separated it from the Town of Hempstead altogether. About 35,000 people live on its 2.2 square miles of land (2020 census), and the city runs its own police department and its own court.
Every moving violation written inside the city goes to Long Beach City Court. Our court page lists the room, phone, hours and accepted payments. The city warns that some tickets require an appearance before the judge, so check yours before assuming you can mail it in.
If the stop turned into an arrest, the case usually stays in the same building. City courts outside New York City hear misdemeanors and arraign felonies, so a DWI or a driving while suspended charge inside Long Beach is a City Court case, not one sent to Hempstead.
The 11561 Problem: Five Communities, One Island
Long Beach shares its island with four neighbours: the Village of Atlantic Beach and the hamlet of East Atlantic Beach to the west, the hamlets of Lido Beach and Point Lookout to the east. Only Long Beach and Atlantic Beach are incorporated. The Town of Hempstead governs the rest directly.
East Atlantic Beach and Lido Beach both use 11561, the city’s own ZIP code. So a summons showing “Long Beach, NY 11561” can describe a block the city does not govern. For a stop in Lido Beach or East Atlantic Beach, an ordinary moving violation is normally sent to the county’s Traffic and Parking Violations Agency in Garden City. That agency runs on different rules: its prosecutor makes any offer, a Judicial Hearing Officer approves it, and speeding tickets are shut out of its plea bargain by mail program. Criminal charges from those hamlets are a District Court matter in Hempstead.
Atlantic Beach has a village court on a fortnightly calendar, covered on our Atlantic Beach Village Court page. Cross the Long Beach Boulevard bridge over Reynolds Channel and you reach the Village of Island Park, which keeps a court of its own.
Who Wrote the Ticket?
The badge is a useful clue. Inside the city, tickets come from the Long Beach Police Department; the county’s police directory lists Long Beach with its own force, not a county precinct. A Nassau County Police officer on your summons suggests you were outside the city, in one of the hamlets.
The other possibility is a state trooper. Troop L covers Nassau and Suffolk and absorbed the old State Parkway Police in 1980. The Loop Parkway starts at Lido Boulevard in Point Lookout and crosses Reynolds Channel to the Meadowbrook State Parkway, so drivers leaving for Jones Beach can meet a trooper a few miles from the city line. A trooper’s ticket goes wherever its return court says.
One Summer, Two Tickets: What It Adds Up To
Long Beach tickets often come in pairs over one beach season, so look at how they stack. In June you are stopped for holding your phone while driving: 5 points. In August, 15 mph over: 4 more. That is 9 points inside 18 months.
Anything at 6 or more in that window brings the DMV’s Driver Responsibility Assessment. The bill starts at $100 annually and adds $25 for every point past six, for three years. At 9 points you owe $175 each year, $525 altogether, on top of whatever the court imposed. A stop sign conviction within 24 months would take you to 11, where suspension becomes possible. Meanwhile your insurer prices both convictions at every renewal. Our cell phone ticket lawyer page explains why the phone charge is often the first one worth fighting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Lido Beach ticket handled by Long Beach City Court?
Generally not. Lido Beach is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Hempstead, so most moving violations there go to the county agency in Garden City, even though it shares the city’s ZIP code.
Can I just pay my Long Beach ticket by mail?
Some tickets, yes, but certain summonses require you to appear before the judge, and the ticket says which. Paying is also a guilty plea that puts the points on your record.
Does Long Beach City Court work like a village court?
No. It belongs to the state court system, its staff are state employees, and it hears misdemeanors as well as infractions. Nearby village courts, such as Atlantic Beach, are run by their villages and typically sit on set evenings.
I was stopped on the Loop Parkway. Where is my case?
Read the return court on the ticket. The Loop begins in Point Lookout, outside the city, and parkway tickets are often written by troopers, so the case may not be in Long Beach City Court at all.
I was only here for the beach and live out of state. What now?
For most infractions we can appear for you, so you need not travel back. A New York conviction is reported to your home state, so it does not stay behind in New York.
